The critics have spoken with their reviews of the new superhero movie Blue Beetle, and the result is very positive with most critics thoroughly enjoying the film.

Officially set to hit the big screen this weekend, Blue Beetle now has its early reviews coming in from approved critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Collectively, the first 41 reviews for the movie have given the film a debut score of 88%, putting it firmly into the "Fresh" category. The number will likely fluctuate a bit as the reviews continue to be submitted in the coming days, but debuting with such a strong score is definitely a great sign for Blue Beetle heading into its wide release.

What many critics agree on is that Blue Beetle shines with its humor as well as its presentation of the family dynamics in the story. Pete Hammond of Deadline praised Blue Beetle for having "more heart and humor than most in this well worn genre," while Variety reviewer Owen Gleiberman agreed that the movie feels "like a breath of fresh pulp," standing out from other recent superhero movies. The film has even drawn comparisons to classic Marvel Cinematic Universe movies like Iron Man, reminiscent of a time before so many interconnected superhero films brought about "multiverse fatigue."

"Long before the narrative overcrowding of cross-pollination, composite timelines and the damn multiverse brought fatigue to the modern comic-book superhero adventure, those movies had freshness and a buoyant sense of fun," says David Rooney of THR. "DC’s unexpectedly charming Blue Beetle is something of a throwback to that era, bolstered by humor and heart that stem from the Mexican American title character’s love for his tight-knit family, and no less so from their reciprocal support."

Critics Love Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes

The film notably introduced Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, the teenager who becomes the titular superhero in the film. The Cobra Kai star is apparently a natural in the role, as the critics have very kind things to say about the actor's performance. As Ben Rolph of DiscussingFilm puts it, "Xolo Maridueña is undoubtedly a star in the making, he was born to play Blue Beetle and knocks it out of the park with his personable and charming performance. "

Fans can see how much they agree with the critics by watching Blue Beetle upon its release. The film is tracking to dethrone Barbie at the box office this weekend, but the prospects of Blue Beetle getting a follow-up will be depending on how much the movie earns at the box office overall. The strong weekend projections and fantastic reviews are a good start.

Blue Beetle premieres in theaters officially on Aug. 18, 2023.
