The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon executive producer Greg Nicotero has revealed the new type of walker that will appear in the upcoming AMC series.

"Dixon takes us back to the beginning of what the DNA of The Walking Dead started as, which is a man on a mission," Nicotero told TV Insider. The EP added that the show will find Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) coming face-to-face with a new type of walker called burners. "These zombies have mutated to a point where if they touch or bite you or their blood gets on you, it burns you significantly," he explained. "It changes all the rules."

Walking Dead fans can currently get a sneak peek at burners on AMC+. The streaming platform has released the first 10 minutes of Daryl Dixon, ahead of the show's Sept. 10 premiere, which shows Daryl encountering the new zombie variant while wandering through the seaside town of Marseille. Other walker variants include the smart zombies -- dubbed "climbers" -- which are capable of scaling walls, opening doors and picking up objects, as seen on the final season of The Walking Dead.

Daryl Dixon Is on a Mission in France

While it is currently unknown why Daryl has washed ashore in France, the fan-favorite character won't stay inactive for long. Marketing for the hotly-anticipated show has shown Daryl being tasked with what seems like a straightforward mission: protect and guide a young boy named Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi) across France to a mysterious location. During his time in France, he will form new friendships with locals like Union of Hope nun Isabelle, played by Harry Potter's Clémence Poésy.

Daryl Dixon Renewed for Season 2

AMC seems confident that Daryl Dixon will be a hit for the network since it has already renewed the show for a second season. The renewal announcement was made during AMC's The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2023. The Walking Dead: Dead City, starring Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, which wrapped up its first season on July 23, was also renewed.

"This next chapter in the Walking Dead Universe continues to thrive with a terrific inaugural season for Dead City and highly anticipated new journey for fan-favorite character Daryl Dixon coming in September," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment for AMC Networks. "We can’t wait to bring Dead City fans back to the epicenter of Manhattan for more zip-lining action with Maggie and Negan. And, ahead of its debut, we’re thrilled to double down on Daryl as we bring the apocalypse to France, transforming Notre Dame, Pont du Gard and other iconic locales into an apocalyptic landscape unlike anything we’ve seen before."

Daryl Dixon premieres on AMC on Sept. 10.
